The world moves quickly, even when time seems to stand still. My art explores time in multiple aspects of the definition—I freeze time in photographs, draw inspiration from art history and time periods in the past, and use time as a means of process and as a subject itself. I hope to communicate the importance of documenting life. I believe remembering the world around the viewer in the current moment is critical to share with the world.
Time, as a theme, manifests itself differently throughout my work. Photography has been my primary medium, only recently branching out towards sewing. Spontaneous photography was my primary work until a few years ago, when I started learning how to use Photoshop and Lightroom. One work recreates motion blur by combining five photographs into one. Digital editing skills also led me to shoot portraits and event photography for friends and family. Currently, I also work in the darkroom with 35 and medium-format film. I utilize strobe lights and create studio sets for portraiture. Embroidery and bookmaking are two new mediums for me. My embroidery book showcases twelve flowers, one for each month of the year. It was made during quarantine and is a small celebration of everyone having at least one birthday during the Covid-19 pandemic. Light & Shadow, my photography book, combines my love for photography and bookmaking. Embroidery and bookmaking require significant time to learn and make well, similarly to digital editing and creating photographs. Overall, my goal as an artist is to make the viewer contemplate the concept of time in a new light by utilizing it as a subject and a medium; this new light brings awareness to the importance of documenting the viewer’s own connection with the past, present, or future.
